Gleipnir
the binding — six impossible things woven soft as silk, holding what iron could not
Memories from the shared culture · the binding
six impossible things.
the dwarves' weave
A cat's footfall, a woman's beard, a mountain's roots, a fish's breath, a bird's spittle, the sound a bear makes thinking. The wolf laughed at the little ribbon and let them tie it. It held — where twice-burst iron had not.
Iron could not hold Fenrir — twice they bound him with iron, twice he burst it. So the dwarves wove Gleipnir: a ribbon soft as silk, made of six impossible things — a cat's footfall, a woman's beard, a mountain's roots, a fish's breath, a bird's spittle, and the sound a bear makes thinking. The wolf laughed at the little ribbon and let them tie it, because no thing so small could ever hold him. It held. The lesson is the garden's third law: bind the hunger with small impossible things, and let it work.
