The Plain Facts, Carved

What It Is

ᚇ

A collection of 3D and 2D models for accessories — the workbench of the garden’s Maker Faire years. OpenSCAD files sit beside paper sketches and Eagle exports: nameplates, stands, brackets, boxes, and the small unclassifiable fixtures a workshop generates when it fixes itself.

The models span the full span of the bench — parametric OpenSCAD that can be re-dimensioned at will, and one-off 2D work cut for a single job. Among them: the firebox nameplate that got printed on camera, stands for the machines that needed standing, and the parts of machines that flew.

It is not a product; it is a habit — a workbench that keeps its own drawer of templates, so that the next thing the garden needs is one print away.

Told in the Seanchaí Tradition

The Build Story

ᚏ

Gobán Saor, the wright of the old stories, never had a workshop of his own — he arrived where the work was, built what was asked, and if the asking was polite he built it better than it was asked. The tales credit him with churches thrown up in a night and round towers that only lean because he built them on a bet. But the part the tales skip is the drawer of patterns he must have carried — no wanderer builds twice from nothing. This bench is that drawer. It began in the Athlone workshop in the maker-years, when a printer hummed in the corner and everything the garden lacked became a project: a nameplate for the firebox, a stand for the games machine, brackets for the bench itself. At the Faire the children chained balls down cardboard hills and called it engineering, and the garden’s contraptions clanked through the same ritual — and then, in the back garden, a rocket went up off a printed fin-can and the sky briefly belonged to a suburban back yard. The models stayed; the rockets came down; the moss grew over the drawer like a green cloth laid by a host who expects you back.
