The Plain Facts, Carved

What It Is

ᚅ

Brewing electronics — sensors and control for the ancient chemistry of making beer. Temperature watched, timings kept, the mash held where the enzymes are happiest, all of it instrumented by a bench that wanted its ale correct.

Brewing is one of the very few sacred chemistries: the same transformation performed in every culture that ever had grain, guarded by rules older than the equipment. The electronics here are the servant of that tradition — thermometry and timing, in C++, around a kettle.

It exists because gods brew, and because a workshop that can brew exactly the same beer twice will not settle for less.

The Build Story

ᚏ

Goibniu, the gods’ smith, brewed — and this is not a metaphor, it is the actual story. The feast of Goibniu was a beer: the ale of the otherworld, and the precise property of that ale, the old texts agree, was that it preserved — whoever drank it did not decay, did not sicken, did not grow old, and — the detail the texts keep with a straight face — did not suffer the morning after. The whole of brewing’s promise, ancient and modern, is in those two clauses: keep the drinker, and spare the morning. Every brewery since has been chasing the same warranty with progressively less divine equipment. The garden’s contribution, in 2018, was electronics — sensors in the mash, timings kept by silicon, the temperature held where the enzymes want it with a patience no human brewer keeps through a whole boil. The C++ does not taste; it attends. The gods brewed, the story says, so brewing is not beneath a craftsman’s dignity — it is the oldest craft there is. The moss grows on this stone like foam on a glass, which is to say: at the top, cheerfully.
