The Plain Facts, Carved

What It Is

ᚇ

A parameterized, Blender-scripted, 3D-printable celtic ring. A Python script stands in for the jeweller: feed it the ring size, the band’s width, the depth of the knotwork, and the runes to carve, and it grows the whole ring as a printable mesh.

The band carries carved celtic knotwork and a runic inscription, and a channel is left open along the bezel for a gold inlay — so the print comes off the resin plate ready to receive the metal, no carving hand required.

Every dimension of the ring is a number that can be changed, which means every ring after the first costs only the resin to print.

Told in the Seanchaí Tradition

The Build Story

ᚏ

Odin wore a ring called Draupnir, and the sagas are precise about its arithmetic: every ninth night it dripped eight new rings of itself, each as heavy and as fine as the first. The dwarfs who poured it knew the secret the gods did not — that a ring is not an object but a parameter set, and that anything written once can be written eight times more. So when this garden wanted rings, it did not pour gold into sand; it wrote a Python script and gave it to Blender, and the script carves knotwork and runes into a band the way a god’s name is carved into a rune-stone — because ink is never deep enough. The printer builds each ring a layer at a time, a hair’s thickness of resin per pass, patient as the ninth night coming round again, and the gold inlay channel waits open along the rim like a promise the metal has not yet been invited to keep. Change one number and a new ring drips from the old one — Draupnir’s trick, done with a printer instead of a forge. The Norse knew the myth; the garden merely ran it.

The camera came to the bench itself, and the reels it carried back are planted here:

The nine-tailed fox ring — printed in resin, filmed close. — The stand the rings rest on — printed, assembled, planted.
