The Plain Facts, Carved

What It Is

ᚅ

A wearable hardware experiment — a crown of cinders. LEDs where the embers would be, a controller in the band, the whole volcano worn at a tilt: the mountain’s most theatrical threat, made personal and portable.

The 2018 bench built it as a study in wearable lighting — heatmapped glows, a slowly breathing pulse of the magma color, everything carried on the head where a crown goes and nothing catching fire, which is the whole engineering achievement of a wearable volcano.

It exists because the myth of the burning mountain is about how it looks from the outside, and this build answers: how does it look worn.

The Build Story

ᚏ

There is a hill in the south — Slieve Gullion, the Calliagh would tell you, watching you climb it — whose lake at the top turns the swimmer old in one afternoon, whose cinders are remembered in every telling, whose whole reputation is burn. The stories about burning hills always carry the same warning disguised as geography: the fire is not the danger, the danger is wearing the fire — the crown of cinders, the smoldering sovereignty that the old kings’ stories hand to whoever dares to put on. The 2018 bench took the dare with LED and thread instead of lava and destiny: a wearable hill, glows sequenced to breathe like a vent, the magma color held at exactly the temperature of the imaginary — which is warm, but not so warm as to end the evening. The mountain teaches that fire is worn, not watched, the Calliagh says, in the version where she is in a good mood. And the moss grows on this stone the way nothing green grows on a real volcano — which is the point: this one is safe enough to keep moss, and that is the best any fire ever managed.
