The Plain Facts, Carved

What It Is

ᚓ
A Home Assistant integration for monitoring low-battery devices — the watch that goes the rounds of the house and takes the news of every sentry whose flame is guttering. It is built in Python as a Home Assistant integration, reading the battery levels of the devices on the walls and reporting the dimming ones — the brownouts — while there is still time to feed them. It exists because the house's watchmen die quietly: a sensor that expires at its post should be mourned in advance, and replaced in daylight, not discovered cold at the hour of need.

The Build Story

ᚏ

In the old law of the house, the hearth-fire was never allowed to go out — not for tidiness but for survival: a fire relit is a day lost, a guest turned cold, a hall unprotected in the dark. The youngest of the household held the duty, walking the round at dusk with the tray, feeding the embers that were fading and counting them aloud to the rí. This integration is that walk made constant: a Home Assistant watchman that goes the rounds of the house and takes the news of every battery running low, every sentry's flame guttering toward brownout, while there is still time to feed it. Vulcan lends the watch its name, and Goibniu of the Tuatha lends it the doctrine — the forge that never went cold, because somebody always kept the embers' ledger. The Norse kept the same commandment further north: never let the hall-fire die in winter, and never trust a man whose lamp you cannot see. The dimming devices of this household are reported like the news of the frontier, and the moss keeps its own quiet tally at the wall.
